This year, like most other fundraisers, our beloved Wine & Dine event has become virtual—Wine & Shine Online. Mark your calendars for December 8, 2020, from 7:30-8:30 p.m. There will be lots of fun surprises, and you will be inspired! We hope you will join us for this memorable event, as we celebrate our past year’s achievements and supporters, while raising funds to ensure that our students get the help they need to reach their goals and follow their dreams.
During times of crisis, we show our unity by coming together as a community. The ramifications of COVID-19 and its impact on underserved students are going to be felt for many years to come. Even before the crisis, research showed that the achievement and opportunity gaps between higher-income and low-income students have been widening, and that this creates long-lasting obstacles to economic mobility. It is now well known that COVID-19 has had a much broader and more negative impact on communities of color than middle and upper class white communities. Horizons students and families have felt the direct results, and they look to Horizons as a vital lifeline towards a brighter future.
Recent studies like one from Georgetown University, “COVID-19 has Harmful Effects on Children in Low Income Families,” and McKinsey & Company, “COVID-19 and Student Learning in the United States: The Hurt Could Last a Lifetime, reinforce what we are seeing on the ground—underserved and under-resourced students are falling farther and farther behind. Horizons at CA is working hard to offer additional support by expanding our tutoring program with CA Upper School students and Horizons students, and our restructured high school mentorship program that provides one-on-one mentors throughout the school year.
With your help, we can provide a high-quality enrichment program that gives our Horizons students what they need to succeed in school and in life.
