CA Commencement 2018

Graduation Ceremony 2018

On a crystal-clear morning and to the traditional strains of “Pomp and Circumstance” played by Boulder Brass, 100 members of the Class of 2018 emerged from Welborn House and took their places on the dais, ready to receive their diplomas.

In his opening remarks, Head of School Dr. Mike Davis praised the graduating students for their accomplishments and their “beautiful souls.”

“The reason we are proud is because you are such interesting people who are fun to be around,” Davis said. “You have wonderful senses of humor, diverse interests and passions, and you are kind and compassionate people.”

Gemma Ryu, who was chosen by her classmates to be the speaker, urged her classmates to follow the advice of the late astrophysicist Carl Sagan when he said, “If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.”

“We are starting to build our own universes,” Ryu said. “But the evolution of a universe is rarely stable and often uncertain….We should be nervous, but also excited, because there is so much time to continue learning.”

Among the graduates in the Class of 2018 were Dr. Davis’s twin daughters, Maggi and Eliza. He recalled the joy he felt on the night they were born, and encouraged the Class of 2018, as they now leave CA, to be present, living in the moment.

“My advice to all of you is to recognize and embrace that sometimes life just needs to be lived,” Davis said. “I am not worried about any of you. The most important thing to remember is that you are ready.”
