Fall Captain’s Award

This past Fall, Colorado Academy programs and teams have proven once again to be some of the best in the state, and our captains have established themselves as tremendous role models. All seven Fall athletic programs were represented in post-season competition. Volleyball played tough through regional competition, Ultimate went to the state tournament and performed well, Boys Soccer had another strong season and made it to the state final eight, Boys Tennis sent six out of seven positions to the state tournament, Cross Country sent the Boys Team to the state meet, along with some individual female runners, Golf sent a team to the state tournament and finished third overall, and Field Hockey proved to be the best in the state by winning the State Championship.

At the end of the Fall competitive season, the Colorado Academy Athletic Department presents the Captain’s Award to the captain of a team who reflects and possesses the qualities that we look for in our CA team captains—work ethic, integrity, commitment, dedication, and leadership, both on and off the field.

Grace Fuselier earned the 2019 Fall Captain’s Award as one of the captains of the State Champion CA Field Hockey team. Fuselier, who was a stalwart on defense with her ability to read plays and execute flat-stick tackles and off-ball positioning, also garnered Second Team All-Conference honors. Fuselier will play Field Hockey for Swarthmore College next year.

“Grace has been a key player for the Field Hockey program—not only this season, but during her three seasons on Varsity,” says Field Hockey Coach Veronica Scott. “Grace’s leadership extends to all aspects of being a team player. From her understanding of the importance of making connections with her teammates off the field to the positive examples she demonstrates on the field, Grace is as her name suggests—a graceful leader who only wants the best for her team.”

Other outstanding Seniors who were nominated for the Fall Captain’s Award were Merrill Rollhaus, who played Volleyball; Avery Lin, who ran Cross Country; Tyler Wolf Williams, who participated in Ultimate; and Brandon Cohen, who competed in Golf.

The Winter sports season is now upon us, and the Girls Swim Team, Boys and Girls Basketball, the Climbing Team, and the Ice Hockey Team have all been working hard to ready themselves for top competition. Check the CA website for scores and schedules, and come out and support the CA athletes and teams. I look forward to seeing you at a game.
