Fall Captain’s Award

Every competitive athletic season, the Colorado Academy Department of Athletics recognizes an individual who recently completed their competitive season and who reflects and possesses the qualities that we look for in our CA team captains—work ethic, integrity, leadership, commitment, dedication, and being a leader both on and off the field.

This year, perhaps more than ever, because of the return to play for all of our traditional fall sports and because this fall season is on the heels of last spring’s “fall” season, the leadership exhibited by our captains has been critical. Most of our athletes play several sports and may have competed in the CHSAA “Season D,” which culminated with championships as late as June 26, so athletes had to be mentally strong and agile this fall.

Senior Field Hockey player Emma Ezrine was chosen by the Athletics Department to be the recipient of the Fall 2021 Captain’s Award. Ezrine was unanimously voted to her captain’s role by her varsity teammates. Ezrine, who is a two-year Varsity Field Hockey player and a member of the Community Leadership Team, can be counted on for her relentless positivity, inclusiveness, and grit. Ezrine is “team first,” as evidenced by the fact that she moved from defense to offense after her Junior season because that’s where the team needed her most. She has flourished up top and can be counted on to score timely goals for her side.

“Emma has shown a depth of leadership this Field Hockey season,” says Field Hockey Coach Veronica Scott. “From her positive, uplifting energy, to her ability to transition from attacker to defender, Emma not only leads by example but brings her teammates with her.”

Three other Senior captains were nominated for the fall season Captain’s Award and warrant recognition for their fine leadership and character. Senior Bo Turnage was one of the captains for the Golf Team that finished second in the state tournament in early October. Jordan Alexander is one of the captains for the Volleyball Team that is headed to the state tournament, and Nico Watters is one of the captains for the Boys Soccer Team. All of these individuals have modeled great sportsmanship, work ethic, and competitiveness.

Emma Ezrine is the epitome of a CA student-athlete—kind, resilient, tough, courageous, and strong. She is also a standout for the CA Girls Lacrosse Team that has won the last six straight Colorado State Championships. Go Mustangs!
