Fall 2022 Captain’s Award

Every competitive athletic season, the Colorado Academy Department of Athletics recognizes an individual who recently completed their competitive season and who reflects and possesses the qualities that we look for in our CA team captains: work ethic, integrity, leadership, commitment, dedication, and being a leader both on and off the field.

Frenz competing in the regional tournament that took place at CA in early October

Senior Tennis player Fabi Frenz is the recipient of the Fall 2022 Captain’s Award. Frenz has been on the Varsity Tennis team as a singles player for four years and has shown tremendous growth throughout his career. A standout amongst his peers, Frenz demonstrates an exemplary work ethic and attention to detail. Not known to be boisterous or outspoken, he leads by his actions, measured demeanor, and inclusive nature. Frenz recently won the #2 Singles 4A State Championship in Pueblo after dominating the #2 Singles bracket in regionals that took place at CA in early October. Frenz garnered First Team All-State for his success. He also was awarded the Sisk Esser Award, given annually by the CA Tennis coaches to the year’s outstanding CA Senior player, recognizing an outstanding season and stellar character. It has been a pleasure to watch Frenz during his time at CA, Coach Noah Tondre says. “Fabi is a leader and always has been, but it wasn’t until his Senior year that he believed it. Although not always vocal, Fabi leads by example and hard work.”

With Frenz winning this fall’s Captain’s Award, it marks the third time that an individual from the Tennis program has received this accolade since the beginning of the recognition program, which started in the fall of 2018. Richter Jordaan ’19, currently at MIT, and Ryan Gaghen ’21, now at Claremont-McKenna, won the award in the past. Field Hockey also can claim three past recipients: Grace Fuselier ’20, Julia Hall ’21, and Emma Ezrine ’22.

Three other Seniors were nominated for this season’s Captain’s Award and warrant recognition for their fine leadership and character: Kaitlin Johnson of the Cross Country program; Sophie Brants of the Varsity Field Hockey team that is headed to the State Tournament and earned a regular season record of 14-1; and Ashley Hagen, Co-Captain for the Ultimate Frisbee Team. All of these Seniors are multi-sport athletes, with Brants and Hagen playing Soccer in the spring and Johnson providing steady determination and leadership in the Girls Lacrosse program. Sophomore Volleyball Captain Josie Hicks was also nominated. All of these individuals modeled great sportsmanship, work ethic, and competitiveness.
