College Office honors first generation college-bound students

Colorado Academy’s College Office established a new tradition at CA this year, recognizing students who are among the first in their families to pursue four-year college degrees.

Prior to commencement dinner, five Class of 2019 students and their families gathered in Welborn House, along with advisors, college counselors, deans, and administrators.

CA’s Director of College Counseling, Sonia Arora ’01, welcomed guests in English and Spanish saying, “A timeless aspect of CA will always be relationships; we see these as central to learning. So, we are here today to reaffirm those relationships for you.”

“Look at everyone around you—advisors, teachers, deans, counselors—many who have walked by your side. I want you to know that we are committed to you and to your families, as you embark on the next phase of your journey.”

Senior advisors Lindsay Beatty and Jane Kelly shared memories and words about each student, and each graduate gave a short speech in which they thanked their parents and others for their love and support. Most students chose to speak to their parents in their first language, Spanish.

Head of School Dr. Mike Davis affirmed, “We are incredibly proud of these students, and we know their families are, as well. These graduates have already achieved something well beyond just a high school diploma. They are academic trailblazers and for each of them, the future is bright.”
