On a snowy, icy November evening, Colorado Academy’s longtime Vocal Music Director, Cindy Jordan, directed her final performance inside Froelicher Theatre. Jordan will retire at the end of the 2018-2019 school year after 43 years at CA. She is the longest-tenured faculty member in CA’s history.
A pensive Jordan watched from the wings, as Dr. Jan De Sal, Director of Visual and Performing Arts, opened the performance with a reminder of Jordan’s long service to the school.
“Colorado Academy has a legacy of choir music,” De Sal said. “It’s a legacy of excellence, and that excellence is synonymous with one name—Cindy Jordan.”
After a warm round of applause from the audience, Jordan was all business, conducting four different groups—Middle School Choir, Chanteurs, Fratelli, and the Chamber Choir. The evening ended with all four choirs combining to perform Aaron Copland’s “The Promise of Living” from the opera The Tender Land with Sophomore Colby Lish assisting Patrick Lee on the four-hand piano accompaniment. At the end of the performance, students joined the audience of parents, grandparents, friends, family, and alumni in their applause for Jordan.
After the concert, Jordan ducked out of sight backstage to thank her singers. But a long line of well-wishers pulled her back into the theater, queuing up to give the teacher fondly known as “Mama Jordan” one more hug.
