In the inaugural winter edition of the CA vs. Kent Showdown Series on January 23, Colorado Academy Boys and Girls Basketball teams both defeated Kent at the University of Denver’s Richie Center, while Mustangs Ice Hockey came up one goal short versus the rival Sun Devils.
Boys Basketball tipped off the evening of competition in Hamilton Gymnasium with a high-scoring 80-76 win over Kent Denver, bumping their record up to 13-2 on the season and putting them in second place in the 4A/3A Metropolitan League.
Many players turned in quality efforts, including Senior Simeon Woldeyohannes, who scored 22 points along with seven assists and six rebounds, and fellow Senior Jason Bratis, with 20 points and seven rebounds.
After the Boys squad, it was Girls Basketball’s turn to take to the court, where the team ultimately prevailed in a narrow 50-47 victory sealed by a buzzer-beating three-pointer lofted by Senior Alex May.
The win made it an eight-game streak for the Mustangs, with May contributing 12 points along with nine rebounds and two steals and fellow Senior Naomi Wolff netting another 12 points, six assists, and five steals. Their efforts helped bring the Girls’ record to 11-4 overall, and 8-0 in the 4A/3A Metropolitan League, where they currently sit in first place.
Finally it was Ice Hockey’s turn in DU’s Magness Arena, where the Mustangs fell 2-1 to Kent. After CA beat Kent 5-1 earlier this season, the Sun Devils returned with a vengeance. A game-tying goal by Junior Noah Stull, assisted by fellow Junior Noah Linder and Kaleb King, was not enough as Kent got a rare second puck past Senior goalkeeper Fraser Smith, who currently has a .938 save percentage. The Mustangs will look to a potential rematch with Kent during the season playoffs.
