In Colorado during May, odds are it will not rain on Giant Relay Day at Colorado Academy. And it should definitely not snow! On May 20, 2022, it did both—rain and snow. But CA faculty, staff, students, parents, and alumni are a resilient bunch. Despite the wintry mix falling from the sky, Giant Relay Day continued with as much enthusiasm as ever.
Lower School
Instead of the customary outdoor Field Day, all Lower School students enjoyed a Physical Education Lollapalooza in the Field House and West Gym, arriving class by class throughout the day. The P.E. teachers pulled out all their favorite challenges.
There were single scooters…
There were double scooters…
And don’t forget the quad scooters.
There were balls of all sizes to play with…
There was room to run…
And there was plenty of time and plenty of hula hoops to spin. Lower Schoolers didn’t get their traditional Field Day, but they had a great time on Giant Relay Day.

Middle School
Middle School students would have been soaked if they tried their relay races outside, so CA wisely moved the races into the Field House.
Students competed on stilts…
They raced piggyback style…
They attempted wheelbarrow maneuvers…
And they built the ever-popular pyramids—all to get to the finish line.

The Giant Relay
Stop the presses! The Parent Team won the Giant Relay Race in 2022!
In many ways, it wasn’t the traditional race, which usually includes parent, faculty and staff, Senior, and alumni teams.
But weather-related concerns reduced the race to two teams, and the competition between alumni and parents was fierce.
The bikers sent up water in their wake as they launched the race…
The runners kept it going…
The swimmers braved freezing temperatures….
Nothing could stop the three-legged racers…
The kayakers took the penultimate lap…
And the runner, Dan Carson, brought it home for the parents.
“It’s a landmark day,” said parent Meghan Geisler, as she celebrated the victory. “I think it may be the first time ever that the parents won!”
Geisler gave special credit to three fathers on the team: Dan Carson, Mike Hewitt, and John Briggs. Hewitt and Briggs both have Seniors graduating in 2022.
It was a day when you didn’t even have to get near the pool to be soaking wet.
Now, we can add this Giant Relay Day to the history books—the one where it rained, and snowed, and the parents took home the trophy.
