Was it cabin fever, confidence in boosters and flu vaccines, or just wanting to celebrate again? Alumni and their families set a new record for attendance at the annual Alumni Skating Party, held on December 2 at the DCC Skate House.
The widespread appeal of the event was evident. Alumni who have attended the skating party for two decades welcomed new families. The youngest guest was 3½-month-old Kuba, son of Natalie Proffitt Lesinski ’09 and her husband James Proffitt. Grandparents Carolyn Smith and Nancy Stamper attended with their children and grandchildren. Alumni attending represented the classes of 1977 through 2010.
Skates were available for everyone who didn’t bring their own. Families went to the ice first. Children loved being pulled on sleds by their parents or using the gliders to help them keep their balance. The outdoor heaters and roaring fireplaces paired perfectly with the cold ice for an ideal active night. Yummy hot chocolate and cookies added extra warmth.
Not everyone came with a family. There were many young alumni without children, including some who stayed until the rink closed, playing broomball and hockey. Head of School Mike Davis enjoyed conversations with alumni and was impressed with the enthusiasm of the skaters. Even those alumni who never got on the ice had a fun evening.
The Skate House kitchen worked overtime bringing trays and trays of family-friendly food and replenishing the ice cream sundae bar frequently. Three dinner times were available to cater to everyone’s schedule. We can safely say this was the best Skating Party yet.
Possibly the most fun was time spent catching up with friends.
