A first-day All-School Assembly socially distanced on Zoom? That was so last year.
On the morning of August 24, 2021, the entire Colorado Academy student body joyfully gathered in person on the west lawn of Welborn House to celebrate the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.
Head of School Dr. Mike Davis gave a special shout-out to 150 new students who were enjoying their first day at CA.
As he does every year, Davis asked CA’s youngest students what they were looking forward to most this year—and there was a definite consensus: the new Lower School playgrounds!
Davis set the tone for the school year by recounting the story of two summer Olympians—Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy—who agreed to share a gold medal in Men’s High Jump after both ended with jumps of 2.37 meters. “Their sportsmanship broke through a tiebreak,” Davis told the students. “Let’s take that spirit with us as we go through this year.”
Davis also noted the many yard signs throughout campus which reinforce the CA culture:
- Use kind words
- Look out for one another
- Start conversations
- Wear masks
- Take on new challenges
- Ask questions
- Do our best
And then, the tradition of the assembly ended with another tradition—the reading of the Senior class names, a moment that many CA students look forward to from their first days at CA. From Annelise Agelopoulos to Jack Younger, the Seniors stood, until all 100 were gathered in a group for their class cheer: “You know who! Class of 2022!”
