More than 500 grandparents—a record number—made the trip to visit Colorado Academy on December 20, 2019. They enjoyed perfect weather, a presentation by Head of School Dr. Mike Davis, musical performances, classroom visits, tours of students’ favorite places on campus, and a holiday lunch in the Campus Center.
Kindergarten students performed “I Love the Mountains in the Winter,” with help from their grandparents on the “Boom dee-ah-dah” chorus. The Fourth and Fifth Grade Instrumental Ensemble played “Let it Snow.” Chanteurs sang “White Winter Hymnal.” Head of School Dr. Mike Davis spoke about Colorado Academy’s many great strengths in academics, arts, and athletics and profiled successful CA alumni who say their education at CA was life-changing.
Lower School students greeted grandparents in their classrooms and then took them on tours of many popular places to learn: Spanish with Sra. Vera or Sra. Owens, the Library, Schotters Music Center, Mr. G’s science lab, Mr. Witt’s iLab, Mrs. Simmons’ Woody’s Pond science classroom, the Athletic Center, and the Ponzio Arts Center, where they could see their art on exhibit. Rounding out the morning, Lower School music teacher Brenda Bartel directed the Grades 4 and 5 Choir and the Fifth Grade Choir in a concert in the Schotters Music Center that left grandparents humming “The Sound of Music.”
In the Middle School, grandparents visited classrooms, science labs, and also watched a computer challenge, where students wrote code as they worked on a programming challenge. In Upper School, there were more than 70 grandparents watching their high schoolers, a record number of visitors.
Pre-Kindergarten students treated their grandparents to a seven-song performance in the theater. Wearing matching hats with the word “Joy” on them, CA’s youngest learners sang classics like “Jingle Bells” and “I’m a Little Teapot,” along with a rousing rendition of the Pre-K anthem, “Every Morning.”
CA’s Sodexo General Manager Paul Worley served a classic holiday dinner, dishing up 595 pounds of turkey, 350 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes, 180 pounds of vegetables. 30 gallons of gravy, and 1600 holiday cookies.
