2019 Middle School Continuation

Colorado Academy’s Eighth Graders, the Class of 2023, will remember their Middle School Continuation Ceremony for many reasons, not the least of which were the fireworks provided by turbulent weather at the start of the event. The storm was so bad that Head of School Dr. Mike Davis began with instructions to the crowd on how to take shelter in case of a tornado. By the time 73 graduates had been honored by their teachers, had sung two songs under the direction of Cindy Jordan, and had been officially sent on to Upper School, the sun was shining.

Davis thanked a “fantastic group of scholars, artists, and athletes” and gave them advice from Mark Twain: “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”

In his speech, Middle School Principal Bill Wolf-Tinsman gave the graduates a powerful image to remember: “Sharks only grow to the size of their tank,” Wolf-Tinsman said. “You are so ready for high school, and tremendous opportunities await you there. I ask you to steer clear of the decisions that will limit your experiences and opportunities as you try to conform to what you believe others want. Do your best to avoid getting stuck in the tank, and be the very best you, every day, every minute.”

Student speaker Kendall Cooper delighted the audience and made a point to be grateful. “Thank you to all the teachers who have challenged and inspired us,” she said. “And thanks to our families whom we treasure.”
