On a perfect Colorado morning with a bit of breeze and Colorado-blue skies, Colorado Academy Lower School students threw themselves into their annual Field Day. After four days of cold, rainy, snowy weather, Field Day proved to be an ideal day for students to bounce, hurdle, and race through multiple sports challenges.
Eighth Grade students provided invaluable service by running the many competitive stations smoothly. After a morning on Slater Field, everyone also enjoyed face painting, creative balloon art, a giant bouncy slide, dancing to a DJ, a great barbecue lunch, cool splashes in the dunk tank, and live music from CA performers directed by Phil Jones.
The day started with an All-School Assembly, at which Head of School Dr. Mike Davis surprised longtime Vocal Music Director Cindy Jordan with a proclamation from the Mayor of Denver, designating May 24 as Cindy Jordan Day. Jordan retired at the end of the year after 43 years of teaching at CA. Yearbook Editor Senior Emilio Teran also announced that the 2018-2019 CA yearbook was dedicated to Stuart Mills of the Upper School English Department. Teran said in the dedication, “Your love of literature and of concise, vivid prose inspires all of the students in your classes to write better, think more in depth, and enjoy the wisdom of the passages we read.” Students cheered enthusiastically throughout a video that recapped another great year at CA.
In the annual running of the Kindergartners vs. Head of School race, Dr. Mike Davis did not improve on his showing in previous years. He started strong but faded before the finish line and was overrun by triumphant “Kindies.”
