Recipient of the Winter Captain's Award, Ella Freimuth

2020 Winter Captain’s Award

Last year, the Colorado Academy Athletic Department started the Captain’s Award to be presented to the captain of a team that recently completed its competitive season, who possesses the qualities that we look for in our CA team captains—work ethic, integrity, leadership, commitment, dedication, and being a leader both on and off the field.

Basketball Captain Ella Freimuth, who is a Junior, was named the 2020 Winter Captain’s Award recipient for her outstanding leadership of the Girls Basketball Team. Freimuth is in the top five in the league in points scored, rebounds, and blocks. “Ella is a great captain and leads by example,” says Coach Reggie Morton. “She communicates in a positive way with her teammates. I never have to tell Ella to play hard or compete, because it is in her DNA!”

Other outstanding Winter athletes who were nominated for the Winter Captain’s Award were Paul Chandler for Ice hockey, Hayden Wolfe for Climbing, Lilly Clowes for Swimming, and Mark LeClair for Boys Basketball.

All five Winter athletic programs have improved through hard work. Ice Hockey, under the direction of Chris Delaney and in only its second season as a Varsity team, has produced more wins than last year and has grown in knowledge of the game and quality of competition.

Girls Basketball, under the new direction of Reggie Morton, has also improved and looks to make a run in the postseason. Boys Basketball, with the guidance of Head Coach Steve Hyatt, has scratched out quality wins over top opponents and set themselves up well for the 2020-2021 season. They finished fifth in the tough Metro League and will be a difficult “out” in the state tournament.

Swimming has had another strong season behind the coaching of Beckie Mutz and finished fourth in the league, while placing a number of swimmers and one diver in the state meet. Climbing also did well, with Head Coach Dylan Gary leading the way. Individual climbers set new standards for CA climbers and competed well at the regional and state tournaments.

The Spring sports season is now upon us. Check the CA website for scores and schedules, and come out and support the CA athletes and teams. I look forward to seeing you at a game.
