A Background on our Trip to Haiti

Colorado Academy helps build school in HaitiColorado Academy is partnered with a school in Haiti called St. Patrick’s of Nordette, located in the Central Plateau region, near the city of Mirebalais.  Working together with a local Denver  non-profit called The Road to Hope, headed by Colorado Academy parents Rich and Lisa Harris, CA is helping to build a new school complex. The new complex will provide much more room and eventually cleaner water, better sanitation, and ultimately a small medical clinic.

The new school is set to be dedicated on St. Patrick’s Day, and nearly 20 CA students and faculty have traveled to Haiti for the event. Their host is the community of Nordette and Pere Jeannot Joseph, an Episcopal Priest who oversees more than 20 schools in the Central Plateau.

It’s an exciting time in the village as locals honor their patron saint and offer a feast.  With the few resources they have, the villagers welcome CA’s travelers and always provide a meal and a grand celebration that can last for several hours. It is a truly amazing experience, and one that will certainly impact the lives of our students in a powerful way.

After the celebration, our students and faculty will continue work on the buildings that are currently under construction, filling in foundations, completing walls, building square foot garden plots, and other tasks. Through this project and ongoing partnership, CA and The Road to Hope will directly impact the lives of many Haitians in a positive way while also building stronger communities both at Colorado Academy and abroad.
